Welcome to My Kitchen
recipes designed to inspire your culinary imagination
Last June, we upended our life in Alexandria, VA and moved, rather impulsively, to Fells Point, Baltimore. While only an hour from our former home, I know very little about the state of MD, the city of Baltimore, or the charming town of Fells Point. But, I am learning, menu by menu, on long walks to admire and explore, and by reading about the history of our new home.
Exploring a New Culinary Landscape
In addition to settling into a new place and pace of life, we are renovating our new home - a condo on the waterfront with a most spectacular view. In the meantime, we are living in a rather tiny rental with a closet sized kitchen - a challenge to say the least.
Over the coming months, I will chronicle the renovation (designing a kitchen from scratch!!!), as well as new food finds. I hope you’ll join my journey shared through occasional blog posts and IG @caryinthekitchen
We all scream for ice cream
When we think of summer, we think of ice cream - cold, creamy and delicious. Making your own is easy and so satisfying.
Luscious Summer Salads
What better way to enjoy summer’s colorful harvest than in a bowl. The secret is a great dressing
The Perfect Roast Chicken
A perfectly roasted chicken is an iconic family meal. This method yields a juicy tenderness for every part of the bird.
Eating = Pleasure
COVID took away my smell and taste; this was an existential crisis, but I learned a lot.
Sweet Potato Soup
Sweet potatoes are the base for this creamy soup with lots of flavor from rosemary, carrots, and brussel sprouts
Grilled Salmon and Peaches
Salmon pairs beautifully with fruit. This scrumptious recipe is perfect for grilling season.
Strawberry Rose & Black Pepper Ice Cream
Creamy strawberry ice cream with a hint of rose and pepper is a perfect way to celebrate the early summer harvest of berries.
Vegan Chocolate Orange Ice Cream
Being non-dairy does not deprive one of the joy of cold creamy ice cream. This coconut based recipe is as creamy and smooth as the diary version.
I first learned to cook in home economics in elementary school. All of these decades later and it is still my favorite past time. Once I began traveling the world, beginning as a backpacker after college, a term in the Peace Corps in Chile, and many passport stamps later, I developed a palate and preference for complex flavor.
I am not a trained chef, so my recipes are for others like me - avid home cooks with a sense of adventure. I find combining flavors to create a unique, satisfying, and even exciting culinary experience to be highly rewarding. I hope you find some surprises in the flavors I infuse everyday dishes with. I hope you will try them in your kitchen.
